The concept of a University Campus as a community united in the pursuit of
knowledge has
existed for a long time. Originally
,
that concept encompassed
just the physical
environment of the University a
s well as the staff
and students who interacted in that environment.
To
ensure that the University of Southampton is providing
a high quality environment for learning for students in the 21st century, as
well as enabling benefits offered by technological developments for
both teaching staff and students
, this concept of
an educational community needs to be extended into the virtual world.
It is
, therefore
,
essential t
hat we create a virtual environment
that
both reflects and improves on the
whole academic community. As with the traditional “bricks and mortar
University” this virtual environment needs to embrace the culture,
atmosphere and
whole experience of University
life.
