The Southampton Learning Environment (SLE) will be the one stop shop for the learning and living needs
of students at the University of Southampton an integrated,digital world readily providing for all aspects of the learner
journey. Enabling provision of learning materials, communication platforms, administration services and social interactions, all within an evolving and involving, empowering and personalised environment. At the same time, we wish to ensure that the SLE supports the pedagogical strategy of the University.

The SLE will be a virtual adaptable and innovative environment fit for the next 10 years.

Important requirements for our SLE are:

It must integrate data from a range of sources;
It should provide an intelligently, personalised view to the user, both learner and teacher;
It will facilitate new approaches to learning.

In the initial phase of this Project, we will investigate approaches both to ID management and to data integration. Profiles will be enabled for users; personalisation and adaptation will be implemented based on both the information in the profile for the user as well as the known history of activities of the user.

A very significant aspect of the Project will be the specification of appropriate policies for the level of exposure of data and the corresponding impementation of authentication.

The plan is that the SLE will provide a rich learning environment, which will be accessed via a web-based front-end.  The front-end will, in turn, provide a personalised and adaptive widget container.

This Project will produce a prototype for the SLE, which we intend to evolve into the full-fledged University system.  We will experiment with linked data approaches for making our own data open.  We will work with ontologies for this data which have already been developed in the School of Electronics and Computer Science.
